How Yoga Healed Me
If we met for the first time, I would introduce myself as a yoga teacher. After that, I would tell you that I love to write. Most of what I write about is yoga. It shaped my life, and through my writing I share teachings that can actually be practiced. You will often hear the teacher’s voice in my words.
I teach yoga because it is a practice that saved my life. Only recently have I begun to speak openly about my past, growing up in an abusive environment, forced into arranged marriages, surviving life threatening situations and wars before eventually arriving in the United States. Years later, life tested me again when I was diagnosed with cancer. Through it all, yoga remained the practice that helped me find freedom and remember who I truly am.
The purpose of sharing this is simple. If this story sparks hope in even one person, if it inspires someone to believe that a different life is possible, then it is worth telling. If I could find my way out, coming for under a rock, so can someone else.
I intentionally call it “this story” rather than “my story” because it belongs to the past. It is something that happened, but it is not who I am.
I am currently writing my memoir, Maha Unshackled, where I share this journey more deeply. Some chapters and audio recordings are already available, if you feel called to explore them.
My Yoga Journey
My first yoga class was challenging. Actually, it was brutal. I had not taken care of my body or been physically active in years. During my second class, I got sick and had to leave within the first ten minutes. It’s embarrassing to admit, especially because the teacher was Bryan Kest. But in a strange way, it also feels like a full circle moment, since I eventually went on to teach yoga at his world renowned studio.
Still, something had already been planted deep inside me. I noticed a certain glow in the yogis around me, a sense that they experienced life differently. I wanted that feeling. So I kept going. Slowly I became stronger and began to find what I call “the yoga zone.” It didn’t happen overnight. It’s called a yoga practice for a reason. I had to commit, put in the time, and do the work, most importantly with compassion toward myself.
There is a saying in yoga, when the student is ready, the teacher appears. After a decade of practicing, I had the privilege of studying with world renowned teachers Travis Eliot and Lauren Eckstrom, and eventually received my Yoga Alliance instructor certification. I am also deeply grateful to Bryan Kest, Govind Das, Dan Ward, and Byron de Marse, who each had a profound influence on my path. Everything I know was shaped by these incredible teachers.
Yoga became my refuge, a place where I could heal and release what cannot be changed. My purpose now is to pass that experience forward, to hold space for others to heal and to share what I have learned over the years with as many people as possible. My teachings will challenge you physically and inspire you mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
See you on the mat.
Why I created Yogi Maha Method
I created Yogi Maha Method teacher training because I got fed up with what yoga has become in modern western culture. A six second social media reel with trending music, and a hot twenty-something girl doing Cirque du Soleil-style poses for likes. Yoga has been reduced to an impossible image, much like the Victoria’s Secret Angels of the 90s, who created an unrealistic fantasy that made women feel not good enough so they would buy more products. Look like this, be flexible, be sexy, wear these $300 trendy yoga pants.
That’s not yoga.
Yoga was never meant to make you feel worse about yourself. Yoga, described by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras as “Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind” (Yogaś citta vṛtti nirodhaḥ). Yoga frees consciousness from raga and dvesha, meaning it frees your mind from likes and dislikes, so you can see clearly, rest in your true nature, and live in inner freedom.
For thousands of years, yogis have explored the deepest questions, like what is the meaning of life and why are you here. These answers cannot be found in a six second viral video. Yoga is a science that is now being studied at Harvard, Stanford, and in many scientific research settings. Yoga removes the disturbances of the mind so you can see clearly, beyond the veil of illusion, what in Sanskrit is known as Maya, so you can discover your true self and purpose. That is how you heal and live a more fulfilling life with more grace and ease. You stop swimming against the current and allow the flow to carry you.
10 Things About Me
I live and teach yoga in Malibu and love the laid back beach life.
I have a goldendoodle named Benji who basically runs the house.
I’m the author and founder of Yogi Maha Method, where I train and certify yoga teachers.
I’m a total nerd and can’t stop learning about yoga, psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, energy, and the meaning of our existence.
I write about my messed up upbringing and how yoga helped me heal and find my way.
One of the most mind blowing things that ever happened in my life, like I’m-a-girl-from-Yemen-HOW-DID-THIS-HAPPEN?!?! was being featured in the award winning documentary Scars Unseen.
The things I try to live by are simple, follow your bliss, do your best, stay consistent, surround yourself with inspiring people, keep learning, never give up, believe in yourself, give more, love more, and drop the ego.
The most important thing I tell my students is this, don’t doubt yourself or give your power away, everything you need is already inside you.
I love hosting yoga retreats because they create space to slow down, reconnect, and remember what really matters.
I still can’t believe this is the “work” I get to do, meeting students, learning from them, and guiding them on their journey is something I never take for granted.
If you ever want to connect with me, ask a question or simply say hi, you can always reach me at maha@yogimaha.com, and I will personally respond to you.
Much love and gratitude,
Maha
